about

The proposal of a new building of the Czech national library tries to answer the relations of a library to the current times and the building itself to its surroundings. We combine solid, stable, closed platforms that are architecturally defined /mostly for book-storage/ with open, interactive spaces in-between, where the interface between the librarians, public and technology takes place. The monumental hall is placed in the centre of the building and it is open up to the glassed cupola-shaped roof. It provides the common atmosphere to all levels and the presence of the national archive at the public space. The main space is on the top of this structure – public floor with open stacks and study area. It is the best place for viewing the town bellow. The house has double-skinned cupola roofing, created by a prefabricated tubular-steel space frames bent to a curve shape. The height of the cupola is 40m, diameter 96m.
